All dogs instinctively pull on an ordinary lead; the counter-pressure makes the dog pull harder and harder. The head collar prevents this behaviour in 3 steps:
- The pull of the lead is moved to the back of the neck, which makes the dog relax (as when the mother picks a puppy up by the neck)
- The light pressure on the top of the muzzle triggers a reflex that makes the dog relax at once
- Just as a halter steers a horse: the body follows the nose
